How to practise this subject

These practice suggestions are editorial guidance from Australian Study Resources.

  1. Open the 2025 ATAR course examination, Section One — Comprehending (Q1 and Q2). Task focus — Two compulsory questions of equal weighting (15 marks each) on two unseen texts — one written, the second written, visual or multimodal, poetry and drama excluded — each answered concisely in approximately 200–300 words; one question can require comparison between the two texts. Attempt it before consulting the marking guidance, then identify the evidence or working that supports your answer.
  2. Open the 2025 ATAR course examination, Section Two — Responding (one of six). Task focus — One extended response chosen from six questions, requiring analytical and critical thinking about studied texts — interpreting, analysing, comparing, contrasting, reflecting on and/or evaluating a studied text or texts, using any text or text type studied. Attempt it before consulting the marking guidance, then identify the evidence or working that supports your answer.
  3. Open the 2025 ATAR course examination, Section Three — Composing (one of five). Task focus — One sustained piece of original writing chosen from five prompts, requiring the candidate to select form(s) of writing appropriate to a specified audience, context and purpose; the prompts are not directly related to studied texts. Attempt it before consulting the marking guidance, then identify the evidence or working that supports your answer.
  4. Record the specific point you missed, write a corrected response, and attempt another question that requires the same skill. Check older material against your current course before reusing it.

Plan your next practice session

Choose one response from your practice sequence. Identify its main claim, underline the evidence and explain how that evidence answers the question. Revise any claim that is broader than its support.
