SACE Stage 2

Official curriculum and assessment

To start SACE Music Studies revision, open the 2025 subject assessment advice (Word). Use the official resources below to choose a task, attempt it independently and check your response against the available assessment guidance. The practice sequence below explains how to turn that review into a focused next attempt. Confirm the paper’s course and syllabus year before using it.

How to practise this subject

These practice suggestions are editorial guidance from Australian Study Resources.

  1. Open the 2025 Music Studies examination 2025, Question 1. Task focus — Nine 1-mark tick-box items, each played three times: choose the rhythm (crotchet beat, then dotted-crotchet beat), choose the melody (two items), name a triad quality, pick the time signature of two excerpts from options including 5/8, 6/8 and 7/8, and pick which of four chord progressions (diatonic sevenths in F major; then a compound-time progression including a half-diminished chord and B7(b9)) accompanies a melody. The SAA notes (c) and (i) were hardest. Attempt it before consulting the marking guidance, then identify the evidence or working that supports your answer.
  2. Open the 2025 Music Studies examination 2025, Question 6. Task focus — Develop and complete an eight-bar melody in compound time from a played four-bar opening; weaker answers mistook the minor tonality for F major. Attempt it before consulting the marking guidance, then identify the evidence or working that supports your answer.
  3. Open the 2025 Music Studies examination 2025, Question 7. Task focus — Questions on a printed score for string quartet: the cello's compositional technique in the opening, a chord to name (reading several clefs, quality and inversion), how arco and another string technique are played, tonality and harmony with evidence (4), transcribing two bars of the viola (alto clef) into treble clef, the relationship between three upper parts, and three textures with bar numbers. Attempt it before consulting the marking guidance, then identify the evidence or working that supports your answer.
  4. Record the specific point you missed, write a corrected response, and attempt another question that requires the same skill. Check older material against your current course before reusing it.

Plan your next practice session

Choose a practical task or example from your course. Record one criterion, compare two approaches and document what changed after a trial. Use the same criterion to review the revision.

How to document decisions in a practical project — includes an original example and a downloadable worksheet.
